The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency became the first European regulator to grant the drug a license. In the European Union, a decision on its approval is not expected before next year.
Foundayo contains orforglipron and is Eli Lilly's first oral formulation of a GLP-1-class drug. Demand for such medicines has increased significantly in recent years, partly due to their popularity among celebrities and influencers. The company's injectable drug Mounjaro contains tirzepatide.
Competition in the pill market
Foundayo's launch on the British market follows the arrival of a tablet version of Wegovy from Denmark's Novo Nordisk. The drug, containing the active ingredient semaglutide, has already been launched in the U.S. and the United Kingdom, and is later expected to become available in some EU countries as well.
Initially, Foundayo will be available in the United Kingdom mainly through the private market. A decision on whether the UK's National Health Service will pay for the drug is not expected before November 18. It will be made by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence.
