The European Union is planning new restrictions against Russia's shadow fleet despite the blocking of decisions. The political situation in Hungary is delaying the approval of aid to Ukraine and further sanctions.

The EU is looking for an "opportunity window" for sanctions against Russia. The adoption of the 20th package is not yet expected, but the 21st is already being discussed, UNN reports with reference to DW.

According to diplomats, key decisions on supporting Ukraine, including the final approval of 90 billion euros in financial aid to Ukraine, remain blocked. "There is a strong call in the EU to adopt sanctions at the first opportunity," a high-ranking EU official said at a briefing in Brussels, the publication notes.
At the same time, if such an "opportunity window" appears, the ministers of the EU member states will be ready to "take advantage of it as soon as possible." Many of them, according to the EU representative, would have preferred to adopt this package several weeks ago. At the same time, the next, 21st package of sanctions is already being discussed in the European Union.

The delay is related to the political situation in Hungary, where a power transition is underway after the parliamentary elections, diplomats say. Until its completion, the current government is not expected to make any key decisions at the EU level. Officially, the EU emphasizes that it intends to continue pressure on Russia: this includes measures against the "shadow fleet" and limiting Moscow's economic capabilities to continue the war.
