The EU has a plan to resolve Slovakia's gas dispute with Ukraine - Politico

The European Union is discussing a new plan that would allow the use of Ukraine's giant underground gas storage facilities to resolve a long-standing dispute between Ukraine and Slovakia, citing two officials familiar with the talks, Politico reports, UNN writes.

Details

The proposal, first discussed by European Commissioners during a visit to Kyiv last month, aims "to appease Slovakia's anger over the loss of energy revenues following the completion of the gas transit agreement between Ukraine and Russia in January," the publication writes. The agreement provided for the supply of gas to the EU, and Slovakia collected transit fees - up to 500 million euros per year.

As the publication writes, pro-Russian Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has pushed Ukraine to renew the agreement, threatening to cut off electricity exports to Ukraine and support for refugees. But Kyiv did not budge.

According to one European Commission official and one EU official, the European Commission, the EU's executive body, "is considering a plan that could help restore supplies to Slovakia."

This scheme would avoid the need to buy gas from Russia - a clear ban under the bloc's REPowerEU plan, which aims to phase out imports from Russia by 2027. "Instead, Ukraine will increase gas imports from Greece and Turkey and store up to 10 billion cubic meters of gas in its storage facilities," officials said, granted anonymity to speak about sensitive issues.

"These supplies would then pass through Slovak pipelines to countries such as Hungary in winter, when supplies are low," the publication writes.

This will "make Slovakia a transit country again," said a European Commission representative, adding that it would also be within the "red line" for Brussels: "It must meet the goals of REPowerEU."
