Seven children died as a result of a fire in a minibus transporting schoolchildren in the city of Gweru in central Zimbabwe. This was reported by the Associated Press with reference to local police, according to UNN.

According to law enforcement officials, there were 24 children in the vehicle at the time of the fire. The causes of the incident are currently being established; however, investigators preliminarily believe the fire could have been caused by damage to a gas cylinder being transported inside the cabin.

Police have not yet released the exact number of casualties. Local media report that the driver and conductor were hospitalized, and all the deceased were students.
School transport safety issue
The tragedy has once again drawn attention to the issue of school transport safety in Zimbabwe, where private minibuses and unregulated taxis are often used to transport children.
Earlier, in February, one of the country's ministers reported the interception of a minibus carrying 42 schoolchildren, even though the vehicle was officially designed for only 15 passengers.
