Russian judge to be tried in Ukraine for sentencing a captured "Azov" fighter

A Russian judge will be tried for sentencing a captured Azov member to 18 years in prison. His actions have been qualified as a violation of the laws and customs of war.

A Russian judge who sentenced a captive "Azov" fighter will be tried in Ukraine, the Prosecutor General's Office reported on Thursday, UNN writes.

"The Prosecutor General's Office has sent an indictment to court regarding a judge of the Southern District Military Court of the Russian Federation," the PGO reported.
According to the investigation, in May 2022, a serviceman of the "Azov" regiment of the National Guard of Ukraine participated in the defense of Mariupol and was taken into Russian captivity.
Two years later, Russian law enforcement opened a criminal case against the Ukrainian defender. He was charged with alleged "terrorist activity" and "participation in a terrorist community."
On December 3, 2024, a judge of the Southern District Military Court of the Russian Federation passed a sentence on the Ukrainian prisoner of war.
"The investigation considers this a violation of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Convention relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War," the statement reads.
The defender of "Azovstal," as indicated, was sentenced to 18 years of imprisonment for the mere fact of participating in an international armed conflict on the side of his own state.
The Russian judge is charged with violating the laws and customs of war (Part 1 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
