On the night of June 2, during a massive Russian attack on Kyiv, more than 41,000 people took shelter at the capital's metro stations, including almost 4,500 children. This is the highest number of people staying in the subway during a nighttime air raid alert in recent years. This was reported by the Kyiv Metropolitan, according to UNN.
Details
The metro administration reminded that during an air raid alert, 46 underground stations operate in shelter mode. All lobbies, without exception, are open for entry.
The Kyiv Metropolitan urged people planning to stay at the stations overnight to arrive in advance before the entrances close, to inform metro staff and police of their intention to stay, and to position themselves directly on the platform.
During prolonged air raid alerts, when tens of thousands of people take shelter at metro stations simultaneously, it is important to care not only for one's own comfort but also for the safety and convenience of others
They also noted that platforms have limited space, so people are asked not to bring bulky items or set up tents that could hinder evacuation in the event of an emergency.
The subway administration recommends bringing warm clothes, blankets, or mats, as the temperature at the stations at night is around 17–18 degrees Celsius. They also advise having water, medicine, hygiene products, and necessary items for pets.
The metropolitan added that central stations usually have fewer people during air raid alerts, so they advise using them if possible.
We ask for understanding toward the metro employees. They are the ones ensuring the uninterrupted operation of the stations in shelter mode while simultaneously performing routine tasks so that even after a night of alarms, the subway remains safe and convenient for passengers during the day
