According to a person close to the Kremlin, Russian army commander Valery Gerasimov and senior officials apparently ignored intelligence warnings that "Ukrainian soldiers" were gathering near the border with Russia's western Kursk region two weeks before the offensive began, and no one informed President Vladimir Putin.
According to Bloomberg, the defense forces inside Russia were taken by surprise and did not initially resist the offensive.
The source reports that Gerasimov is unlikely to be removed from office in the short term, but the Kremlin's patience with his actions in the war is running out.
Bloomberg notes that Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Piskov did not respond to a request for comment.
Context has declared a state of emergency in the Kursk region as it fights for a third day to repel an invasion that Gerasimov said was allegedly about 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers backed by tanks and armored vehicles.
He told Putin in a televised meeting on Wednesday that Russia had deployed troops, air strikes and artillery to try to stop the offensive.
A day later, Russian dictator Putin reacted to the events in the course area and accused Ukraine of a large-scale provocation.
White House press secretary Karin Jean Pierre confirmed that the United States was not warned about the operation in the Kursk region before it was conducted. However, the U.S. administration plans to ask Ukraine for more information about the purpose and nature of the breakthrough.
