IAEA demands access to ZNPP turbine hall following Russian drone damage - statement

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is demanding access to the turbine hall of power unit No. 6 of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) following damage caused by a Russian drone. This was stated by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, UNN reports.

Details

He expressed "serious concern" regarding the incident, which "could jeopardize both the 7 indispensable pillars for ensuring nuclear safety and security during a conflict and the 5 concrete principles for the protection of the ZNPP, which clearly state that there should be no attacks of any kind from or against the plant."

An attack on nuclear facilities is like playing with fire. The IAEA team at the ZNPP has requested access to directly inspect the affected building. This is the first drone attack within the perimeter of the ZNPP site since April 2024,

- Grossi noted.

He added that the IAEA will report additional details after obtaining the requested access to the site of the incident.

Context

On May 28, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant experienced the longest communication failure since the beginning of the full-scale war. This was stated by IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.

The day before, the Defense Forces of Ukraine refuted Russia's claims of an alleged strike on the sixth power unit of the Zaporizhzhia NPP.

Subsequently, the Center for Countering Disinformation of the NSDC pointed out that Russia is once again resorting to nuclear blackmail and information provocations surrounding the Zaporizhzhia NPP. In particular, the enemy is attempting to use lies to cover up both its own strike on a high-rise building in Romania and the fact of the attack on the Chernobyl NPP sarcophagus in 2025.
