Former head of the occupied Donetsk pretrial detention center charged with cruel treatment of civilians

A former employee of the Donetsk pretrial detention center headed the occupation facility and held five civilians in inhumane conditions. He faces up to 12 years in prison.
Law enforcement officers notified a former employee of the Donetsk pretrial detention center of suspicion. After the Russian occupation, he headed an illegally established penal institution, UNN reports, citing the Office of the Prosecutor General.

According to the investigation, in December 2022, the suspect headed the occupying authorities’ pretrial detention center.
At least five civilians - three women and two men aged between 19 and 67 - were unlawfully detained because of their pro-Ukrainian position and on fabricated charges. They were held in inhumane conditions: in cells with constant dim lighting, no ventilation, and dampness, mold, bedbugs, cockroaches, lice, and rats
The prisoners were fed food unfit for consumption. Due to constant undernourishment, they rapidly lost weight - some by almost 20 kg. At the same time, there was virtually no drinking water: instead, technical water was supplied only once every three days for several hours.
The suspect is charged with cruel treatment of the civilian population, committed by a group of persons acting in prior conspiracy (Part 1 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). The article provides for a sentence of 8 to 12 years’ imprisonment.
