The fire that occurred in the Mediterranean port of Damietta in Egypt was caused by a drone strike on the American gas tanker Energos Winter. This is confirmed by data from British maritime security companies, Reuters sources, and verification of video recordings of the incident, reports UNN.

Earlier, the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum only reported a fire in the port without naming its cause. Meanwhile, the British company Ambrey stated that a drone crashed into the American floating gas tanker, and the fire spread to a second vessel - Gaslog Salem.

According to Reuters, three sources in the trade sector and two interlocutors in the Egyptian security forces also confirmed that the likely cause of the explosion was precisely a drone strike. The British company Vanguard reported that the Energos Winter was hit by an unidentified projectile on its starboard side, after which a fire broke out and was later extinguished.

Reuters verified the video and confirmed the location of the incident

The Reuters agency was able to geolocate a video that was circulating on social media by matching it with port infrastructure, gas storage tanks, satellite images, and vessel tracking data.

Journalists also confirmed that the video captured the vessels Energos Winter and Gaslog Salem. At the same time, no party has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

The incident occurred amid a new escalation in the Middle East following Iran's missile strike on American military forces and attacks by the US and Saudi Arabia on Tehran-backed groups in Iraq.
