European Parliament introduces new system for deporting illegal migrants from the EU

Members of the European Parliament have approved changes to the EU policy regarding the return of third-country nationals staying in the EU illegally. This was reported by UNN with reference to the European Parliament press service.

Details

The new rules aim to simplify and speed up procedures while fully respecting fundamental human rights and international law, including the principle of non-refoulement and the prohibition of collective expulsions, as well as preventing abuse and unauthorized movements within the EU.

418 MEPs voted in favor, 218 against, and 30 abstained.

It is also reported that migrants subject to a return decision (with the exception of unaccompanied minors) may be transferred to "return centers" in a country that agrees to receive them, based on an agreement concluded by an EU member state.

A return decision issued by competent national authorities regarding a non-EU national staying illegally in a member state will entail an obligation to leave the respective EU country immediately or within a specified period
