An explosion at a scrap metal recycling center in Lviv region has claimed the lives of two people and led to a criminal investigation.

On Wednesday, April 24, an explosion occurred at a scrap metal collection point in Lviv region , killing two people and injuring another. Law enforcement officers opened a criminal investigation. UNN reported this with reference to the Main Department of the National Police in Lviv region.

According to law enforcement, a 58-year-old resident of a village in Yavoriv district, together with her 54-year-old neighbor, brought metal objects to a scrap metal collection point located in the village of Staryi Yar.

During the weighing of the metal, an explosion occurred, killing the man who brought the scrap and the owner of the reception center, a 42-year-old local resident. 

The woman who came with the deceased sustained numerous injuries and is now in hospital.

Law enforcement officers are conducting inspections, establishing the circumstances of the incident and the cause of the explosion.

Criminal proceedings were opened under Article 264 (Negligent storage of firearms or ammunition) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The sanction of the article provides for a sentence of restraint of liberty for up to three years or imprisonment for the same term.
