Almost 70% of Ukrainians are fluent in Ukrainian

The survey showed an increase in the number of Ukrainians who speak Ukrainian in everyday life to 70.5%. 69.5% of respondents rate their language proficiency highly, and 75.5% use it in social and professional communication.

The number of Ukrainians who began to speak Ukrainian in everyday life has increased, and the number of those who highly appreciate their command of the Ukrainian language has reached 69.5%. This is evidenced by a survey conducted by the Razumkov Center and the State Service of Ukraine for Ethnic Policy and Freedom of Conscience, UNN reports.

The majority of respondents rate their command of the Ukrainian language highly. In 2024, 69.5% believe that they are fluent in the language, and 27.1% say that they understand the language well enough for everyday communication.

The preference for using Ukrainian as the main language in domestic communication increased from 46% in 2006 to 70.5% in 2024, reflecting a significant linguistic shift, likely influenced by the national language policy.

There is a significant increase in the use of Ukrainian in social and professional communication. By 2024, 75.5% of respondents say they will mostly speak Ukrainian with friends and at work or in educational institutions.

Survey information

The survey, conducted by the Razumkov Center's sociological service from June 6 to 12, 2024, was part of the USAID/ENGAGE activity, funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented by Pact in Ukraine.

The face-to-face survey was conducted in Vinnytsia, Volyn, Dnipropetrovs'k, Zakarpattia, Zaporizhzhia, Ivano-Frankivsk, Kyiv, Kirovohrad, Lviv, Mykolaiv, Odesa, Poltava, Rivne, Sumy, Ternopil, Kharkiv, Kherson, Cherkasy, Chernihiv, Chernivtsi regions and the city of Kyiv (in Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv, Kharkiv, Kherson regions - only in the territories controlled by the government of Ukraine and not subject to hostilities).

The theoretical sampling error is no more than 2.3%. Restrictions on the survey were caused by the Russian aggression, including the forced evacuation of citizens.
