Leading U.S. airlines, travel, and business associations have warned of serious consequences if international air travel through major American airports is restricted. This was reported by Reuters, according to UNN.

Details

The cause for concern was statements by U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin regarding the possible suspension of international passenger and cargo processing at Newark Airport in New Jersey. According to him, similar measures could affect more than a dozen other airports in so-called "sanctuary cities," including Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle.

Fears of a blow to transportation and tourism

Industry representatives emphasized that international air routes are closely interconnected, so any restrictions would quickly impact passenger travel, cargo shipments, and logistics chains across the country.

Operational changes at a small number of gateway airports would quickly ripple across the country, negatively impacting travelers, cargo shipments, supply chains, and communities

– they stated.

At the same time, three airline executives told Reuters that they do not currently expect such restrictions to be implemented immediately. Mullin attributes the potential actions to a conflict with local New Jersey authorities over what he considers insufficient support for federal immigration services.
