The spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhists is scheduled to depart for the Indian capital on Friday from his home-in-exile in the Himalayan town of Dharamsala. His followers, concerned about his health in recent years, typically perform elaborate prayers before any scheduled medical procedures.
"He will undergo treatment for his left knee," the Dalai Lama's office posted on X, adding that he is expected to travel to India's Ladakh region by the end of June for an extended stay.
The Nobel Peace Prize laureate underwent surgery on the same knee in New York in 2024, though several months later he told Reuters it was "nothing serious," despite the fact that "he walked cautiously with the help of assistants." He now uses a golf cart to cover longer distances within his complex.

China, seeking to strengthen its control over Tibet, considers the Dalai Lama a separatist and says it must approve his successor, citing a centuries-old ritual. The Dalai Lama has urged his followers to reject anyone chosen by Beijing.
