The Syrian Arab Republic is a state in the Middle East, located on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. The country borders Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south, and Lebanon and Israel to the southwest. Its territory is 185,180 km², and its population in 2025 is estimated at over 23.5 million people. The capital and largest city is Damascus, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. From March 15, 2011, to December 8, 2024, the country experienced a civil war, after which a provisional government was formed.
