Shostka is a city in Ukraine, the administrative center of the Shostka urban hromada and Shostka Raion of Sumy Oblast. It is located in northern Ukraine, in the historical region of Siveria, on the banks of the Shostka River, a left tributary of the Desna. As of January 1, 2022, the city's population was 71,966 people, and its area is 43.62 km². Founded as a settlement near a gunpowder factory in 1739, Shostka received city status in 1924. The city played a significant role in industry due to the development of chemical, food, and machine-building industries, becoming an important cultural and educational center of the region.
