Commemoration of the Holy Martyr Basil, Bishop of Amasia
Saint Basil of Amasia lived in the early IV century in the Pontic city of Amasia. He constantly supported and comforted Christians who suffered from persecution by pagans. By order of Emperor Licinius, St. Basil was imprisoned and gathered for trial. On the eve of the trial, the saint sang psalms. At the trial, St. Basil rejected the emperor's offer to become the high priest and was sentenced to death by beheading. The body of the saint was thrown into the sea by the executioners, but it was washed ashore by the waves. Legend has it that St. Basil's head grew to his neck and only a deep scar reminded him of the execution.
