On Friday, the White House sent a letter to Congress stating that hostilities with Iran have "ceased," despite the presence of U.S. armed forces in the region, UNN reports, citing AP.
The publication notes that this statement by Trump effectively bypasses the statutory deadline of May 1 for members of Congress to approve the continuation of the war with Iran.
The letter clearly demonstrates the bold but legally questionable use of presidential power at the heart of Trump's war, which he launched without congressional approval two months ago.
He also made it clear in the letter that the war may still be far from over.
"Despite the success of United States operations against the Iranian regime and efforts to ensure a lasting peace, the threat posed by Iran to the United States and our armed forces remains significant," the Republican president stated.
