On August 15, the world marks International Homeless Animals Day and National Honey Cake Day, while Orthodox believers following the new church calendar celebrate one of the twelve Great Feasts — the Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos, writes UNN.
International Homeless Animals Day
An important ecological and humanitarian observance held annually on the third Saturday of August. The day aims to draw public attention to the problem of stray cats and dogs, encourage sterilization, responsible treatment of animals, and support for shelters.

Dormition of the Most Holy Theotokos (First Most Holy Feast)
According to the new calendar, August 15 marks one of the most important Christian Twelve Great Feasts, which concludes the annual cycle of major church feasts (it was previously celebrated on August 28). It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary's transition to eternal heavenly life. In popular tradition, this day was called the "First Most Holy Feast."
It was believed that from this day the active preparation of supplies for winter began, as well as the preparation of winter crops. In churches, seeds and ears of the new harvest are blessed.
For those who follow the old calendar: August 15 commemorates the holy martyr Stephen, the Protomartyr and Archdeacon. In popular tradition, the day was called "Stephen's Day" or "Stephen's Hay." Peasants gathered the last summer herbs and wove special "Stephen's wreaths," which they used to decorate their homes to protect them from illness and evil spirits.
