Firefighters were called to the area at around 6:40 a.m. on reports of a gas leak and the smell of gas in the street. According to the deputy state fire chief, as the rescue team approached, calls began to come in that an explosion had occurred in the building.
Lisa Chavlytko, who lives in a nearby condominium, said the explosion woke her and her three children and knocked a pet bird to the ground. She said the roof structure of four buildings was warped and aluminum siding fell to the ground.

Rescuers pronounced one person dead at the scene, and a second body was found under the rubble. The person is believed to be the 73-year-old owner of the house, but according to firefighters, he has not yet been identified.
