Trump denied redistricting in South Carolina

On Tuesday, the South Carolina Senate rejected U.S. President Donald Trump's proposal to redraw the state's congressional district boundaries in hopes that Republicans could gain an additional seat in the midterm elections, UNN reports citing AP.

Senators expressed political concerns, fearing that any redistricting map in a state where Democrats have received at least 40% of the vote in the last eight presidential elections could not guarantee a Republican victory in all seven districts.

There were also logistical issues. Statewide primaries are scheduled for June 9, with early voting beginning on Tuesday. The plan called for voiding all congressional votes already cast and holding another statewide primary solely for U.S. House of Representatives elections in August.

Election officials stated that holding three statewide elections in five months would require staff to work around the clock to prepare voting machines and ballots, as well as to meet legal requirements.

The proposal was passed by the South Carolina House of Representatives last Wednesday after two days of lengthy debate.
