As the BBC notes, this is the first US attack on Iran since US President Donald Trump suspended bombing last Friday to give a chance for diplomatic negotiations after 13 days of mutual strikes.
The new strikes were a response to Iran's launch of missiles at a US military base in Jordan. According to US military officials, all missiles were intercepted.
Earlier, Donald Trump stated that the US would deliver a "very powerful" strike on Iran, adding: "Now it's our turn." According to him, Tehran allegedly acknowledged the error of the missile attack and asked Washington to refrain from retaliation.
At the same time, Iran denies involvement in strikes on Saudi Arabia carried out from Iraqi territory, although the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has claimed responsibility for the attack on the US military base in Jordan.
