SBU uncovered new instances of Russia using depleted uranium munitions - radiation levels exceeded by 80 times

The SBU has identified 6 instances of Russia using depleted uranium munitions in "Geran-2" drones in Chernihiv region. The radiation background exceeded the norm by 80 times, posing a threat to health.
The Security Service of Ukraine has identified 6 more instances of the Russian Federation using depleted uranium munitions during shelling of the Chernihiv region - they were found in Russian strike drones of the "Geran-2" type, the SBU reported on July 23, writes UNN.
Counterintelligence and investigators of the Security Service have documented new instances of the Russian Federation using depleted uranium munitions against Ukraine. Dangerous components were found in strike drones of the "Geran-2" type, which the Russians used to attack the Chernihiv region during April-June 2026. As the investigation established, the enemy uses radioactive elements in R-60M missiles, which it adapted for use on its UAVs
During the inspection of the "impact sites" of Russian drones and radiological examination of their warheads, the investigative-operational group and specialists of the State Emergency Service, according to the SBU, "recorded an excess of the natural radiation background by 80 times." "At the same time, the gamma radiation level of individual fragments of enemy drones ranged from 8.3 to 24 μSv/h, with a permissible sanitary norm of 0.3 μSv/h. Such a radiation background poses a direct threat to human health and the environment," the SBU emphasized.
According to the results of the examination initiated by the Security Service, it is reported that "it was established that the warheads of these missiles contain nuclear material identified as Uranium-235 and Uranium-238."
The presence of radioactive components, it is noted, was confirmed by dosimetric equipment and a mobile automated radiological complex.
After the detection and study of the dangerous munitions, comprehensive measures were taken to neutralize them and ensure the safety of citizens.
Based on these facts, SBU investigators opened criminal proceedings under Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (war crimes).
"The Security Service once again urges citizens to be careful if they find fragments of UAVs, missiles, or other munitions. Under no circumstances approach such objects, do not touch or move them," the SBU stated.
The investigation is ongoing under the procedural supervision of the Chernihiv Regional Prosecutor's Office.
