The SBU documented two cases of russia using depleted uranium munitions in "Geran-2" drones in Sumy region in April 2026. The gamma radiation level from the fragments exceeded the natural background by 8.3 and 10.5 μSv/h.

Ukraine has documented new instances of the enemy using radioactive drones with depleted uranium elements, the SBU reported on Thursday, writes UNN.
Counterintelligence and investigators of the Security Service of Ukraine have documented two new instances of the Russian Federation using munitions with depleted uranium elements against Ukraine. The hazardous components were found in Geran-2 type strike UAVs, which the Russians used to attack Sumy region twice in April 2026
As stated, these are R-60M air-to-air guided missiles, which the enemy uses as warheads for their drones during massive shelling of Ukraine.
"During the work of the investigative-operational group and SES specialists at the sites of enemy strikes, the gamma radiation level from fragments of Russian drones with missiles was 8.3 and 10.5 μSv/h. These indicators significantly exceed the natural radiation background and pose a direct threat to human health," the special service noted.
According to the results of an examination initiated by the Security Service, it was established that the warhead of the Russian missiles contains depleted uranium elements with a total mass of 2810 grams. The substance was identified as Uranium-234, Uranium-235, and Uranium-238
After the detection and examination of the hazardous components, comprehensive measures were taken to neutralize them.
Investigators of the Security Service, as stated, are conducting a pre-trial investigation under Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (war crimes) to identify and bring to justice the Russians responsible for the air attacks.
The SBU indicated that in April of this year, SBU counterintelligence uncovered a fact of the enemy using radioactive munitions in Chernihiv region.
"Given the danger of depleted uranium, we urge citizens to be especially careful when detecting fragments of UAVs, missiles, and other means of attack. Under no circumstances approach such objects, do not touch or move them," the special service emphasized.
The investigation is ongoing under the procedural supervision of the Sumy Regional Prosecutor's Office.
