The EU will allocate almost 43 million euros to improve the railway network in Ukraine

Ukrzaliznytsia will receive €43 million from the EU for the development of the European gauge. The project involves improving the railway network and developing a 1435 mm gauge on the Chop-Lviv and Lviv-Chernivtsi-Vadul-Siret sections.

The European Union will allocate almost 43 million euros to Ukrzaliznytsia  under the European Union's Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) program to implement strategic infrastructure projects aimed at building the European gauge railway in Ukraine. This was reported by the press service of Ukrzaliznytsia, UNN reports.

Details

It is noted that the project application was approved by the Program Steering Committee on July 16, 2024. The project envisages the improvement of the railway network and the development of a 1435 mm gauge to ensure technological compatibility and increase the capacity of the railway infrastructure.

With a total budget of EUR 85.91 million, the CEF will provide EUR 42.95 million to Ukrzaliznytsia.

With the help of additional funds, they plan to implement it:

  • designing the reconstruction of railroad facilities with the introduction of a 1435 mm gauge on the Chop-Lviv section;
  • design of reconstruction of railway facilities with the construction of a 1435 mm gauge and electrification on the Lviv - Chernivtsi - Vadul-Siret - State Border section;
  •  development of a strategy for the reconstruction of the Lviv railway junction, taking into account the prospects for expanding the 1435 mm gauge railway network of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) in Ukraine;
  •  design and construction of a 1435 mm track with electrification on the Pavlove-2 / Matyovtse - Uzhhorod section;
  •  electrification of the 1435 mm gauge on the Chop-Uzhhorod section.

 The costs of conducting a TSI compliance review of the above projects, as well as the Kovel-Yahodyn-Gosbordor and Medyka/Mostyska II-Lviv (Sknyliv) sections are also envisaged.
