A man detained in Uzhhorod opened fire on law enforcement officers during a special operation; he is currently in a temporary detention facility, and his actions have been classified under Article 348 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine - encroachment on the life of a law enforcement officer. According to his own words, he "stole" the pistol, the National Police reported on Saturday, providing details, writes UNN.
Details
On July 24, at approximately 6:30 p.m., several children approached police officers who were on duty on Oleg Kutsyn Street in Uzhhorod. They reported hearing sounds of gunshots coming from the territory of the Shakhtynskyi Forest and seeing a suspicious man.
The police officers went to the scene, and during the inspection of the area, more gunshots were heard. A special police operation was launched to apprehend the armed man. Additional police forces were involved in carrying out the tasks, including fighters from the KORD special unit.
During the sweep of the area, criminal police operatives located the suspect.
"During the arrest, the man offered armed resistance and fired shots towards the police officers. Thanks to the professional and coordinated actions of the law enforcement officers, he was detained, and no one was injured," the police stated.
"During investigative actions, police officers seized a combat pistol and ammunition from the detainee. According to the suspect's preliminary testimony, he stole the weapon the day before. Currently, law enforcement officers are verifying this information and establishing the origin of the seized pistol," the police reported.
According to the available records of the National Police of Ukraine, as stated, "the weapon is not registered and is not listed among stolen items."
"The detainee is a 47-year-old resident of the Uzhhorod district, who has previously been repeatedly brought to criminal responsibility. It is also known that the man is a person with a disability established due to a mental disorder," the police stated.
Currently, the suspect has been placed in a temporary detention facility in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. Investigators of the Uzhhorod District Police Department, under the procedural guidance of the District Prosecutor's Office, classify his actions under Article 348 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine - encroachment on the life of a law enforcement officer
A pre-trial investigation is ongoing in the case.
