The Secret Service received information about a suspicious man with a weapon in the vicinity of the White House, after which plainclothes agents began surveillance. When officers attempted to detain him, the man fled, drew a weapon, and opened fire.
In response, agents returned fire and wounded the assailant. He was hospitalized, though his current condition is unknown. A child who was nearby also sustained injuries. According to preliminary data, the child may have been hit by the suspect. The injury is not life-threatening.
