Artmeladze had been in custody for nearly four months. He was detained in Alabama in February after ICE concluded he no longer had a legal basis to remain in the U.S. According to the agency, he became the 19th detainee to die in ICE custody since the beginning of the year.

The previous death at the Winn center occurred on April 11. At that time, 49-year-old Mexican citizen Alejandro Cabrera Clemente died. According to the coroner's report, the cause of death was cardiovascular disease. A previous inspection of the facility revealed problems with medical services, unsanitary conditions, and instances of excessive use of force against detainees.
