German Chancellor Scholz rejects Pope Francis' proposal for a "white flag" in the war in Ukraine, arguing that Ukraine is defending itself against Russian aggression with international support.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has rejected Pope Francis' statement on the "white flag" in the war in Ukraine, German government spokesman Steffen Gebestreit said on Monday, UNN reports citing Handelsblatt.

"It is true that Ukraine is defending itself against the aggressor," the spokesman added, noting that they are also receiving a lot of international support to be able to defend themselves against an aggressive war that violates international law.
Gebestreit also noted that the Vatican representative's assessment of the Pope's statements was taken into account. Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni denied reports that the Pope had called on Ukraine to surrender in an interview with Swiss television.
