SBI exposed a scheme to evade military service in Odesa region. The deputy commander of the unit and accomplices registered more than 20 people, receiving up to UAH 20 million. The suspect faces up to 12 years in prison.

Law enforcement officers have exposed a deputy commander of a military unit from Odesa region who participated in organizing the evasion of certain servicemen from service. This was stated by the State Bureau of Investigation, UNN reports.

Investigators found out that the defendant, together with his accomplices, organized a scheme under which some servicemen of the unit were at home, but according to the documents, they were on duty and received appropriate financial support for this.

These military personnel gave their salary bank cards to the organizers of the scheme, who received all payments in return. According to preliminary data, during the operation of the scheme, the dealers managed to register more than 20 people and receive up to UAH 20 million from them.

On August 2, 2024, the SBI, together with the National Police, detained the deputy commander of a military unit and some servicemen. During the searches, firearms and ammunition, drugs and more than USD 118 thousand were found and seized.  The deputy commander of the military unit was served a notice of suspicion of abuse of power and aiding in evasion of military service (part 5 of Article 426-1, part 5 of Article 27, part 4 of Article 409 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine)

A custodial measure of restraint was imposed on the man with an alternative of bail in the amount of UAH 20 million. The suspect faces imprisonment for up to 12 years.

The investigation is ongoing, and other persons involved in the organization of the scheme are being identified. Measures are also being taken to seize the property of the defendants to compensate for the damage caused to the state.
