The Secretary General of the human rights organization Nihon Hidankyo survived the atomic bombing of Nagasaki in 1945. In his speech, Terumi called on the world “not to allow humanity to destroy itself with nuclear weapons” and to work together for the benefit of human society in a world free of nuclear weapons and wars.

What is known about the organization Nihon Hidankyo

Nihon Hidankyo is a movement founded in 1956 by victims of the nuclear bombings of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, aimed at putting pressure on the Japanese government to protect their rights and lobby for a ban on the use of nuclear weapons.

Its members have worked to raise awareness of the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of the use of nuclear weapons. Nihon Hidankyo has provided thousands of witness statements, issued resolutions and public appeals, and annually sent delegations to the UN and various peace conferences to remind the world of the urgent need for nuclear disarmament. As a result, an international norm emerged that the use of nuclear weapons is morally unacceptable (the “nuclear taboo”).

The Japanese human rights organization has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize at least three times - in 1985, 1994, and 2015.

Details

In 2024, 286 candidates were nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, including the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Pope Francis, and British naturalist David Attenborough.

The bookmakers' favorites were Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny, who died in prison, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. However, Reuters noted that Navalny would not be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize because it is not awarded posthumously, and Zelensky would not win because he leads a country at war.
