Israel and Lebanon to hold historic talks with US participation - Axios reveals details

On Tuesday, April 14, direct talks between representatives of Israel and Lebanon are scheduled to take place in Washington, mediated by the United States. US Secretary of State Mark Rubio, US Ambassador to Lebanon Michelle Issa, State Department Advisor Michael Needham, Israeli Ambassador Yehiel Leiter, and Lebanese Ambassador Nada Hamade are expected to participate. This is reported by UNN with reference to Axios.

Details

According to media reports, this is the highest-level direct meeting between Israel and Lebanon since 1993. The main topics of the meeting will be three key issues:

  • immediate ceasefire and cessation of ground invasion;
    • long-term disarmament of the terrorist group "Hezbollah";
      • signing of a full-fledged peace agreement between the countries.

        As a direct consequence of Hezbollah's reckless actions, the governments of Israel and Lebanon are engaged in open, direct, high-level diplomatic negotiations mediated by the United States.

        - stated the State Department.

        The department added that the talks "will aim to continue dialogue on ensuring the long-term security of Israel's northern border and supporting the Lebanese government's determination to restore full sovereignty over its territory and political life."

        Israel is at war with Hezbollah, not with Lebanon, so there is no reason why these two neighbors should not negotiate.

        - the State Department statement said.

        Recall

        The leader of the Iranian-backed Hezbollah group called on the Lebanese government to reject planned talks with Israel, calling them "unnecessary."
