July reminds us that the middle of summer has begun, its days filled with dense warmth and the scents of herbs. The very name of the month in Ukrainian comes from the blooming of the linden tree - a tree that has long been revered by our ancestors for its healing properties, beauty, and incredible honey aroma. In ancient times, this month was also called "hroznik" (thunder month) due to frequent summer thunderstorms, "bilen" (whitening time), the time when linen was bleached in the sun, and "kosen" (mowing time), the period of active haymaking season, reports UNN.

Details

July marks the peak of vacations and harvest gathering. However, at the same time, the month is filled with important holidays. Here, millennia-old spiritual traditions are closely intertwined with modern state holidays forged in the struggle for independence, as well as days when we pay tribute to representatives of the most important professions.

The peculiarity of July holidays in recent years lies in their profound reinterpretation. Ukraine has finally broken away from Soviet and imperial narratives, which is reflected both in the rescheduling of many professional holidays and in the transition to a new church calendar. Therefore, July today is a month that emphasizes our identity, honors our defenders, medics, creators, and the history of our statehood.

State holidays in July

The main focus of the state calendar in July is honoring the centuries-old history of Ukrainian state-building. On these days, we remember those who laid the foundation of our nation and those who today, with weapons in hand, defend its right to exist.

Day of Ukrainian Statehood (July 15)

This holiday was established relatively recently, but it has colossal symbolic significance. The Day of Ukrainian Statehood reminds the world and ourselves that the history of our country does not begin in 1991. It spans over a thousand years and originates from the founding of Kyiv and the era of Kyivan Rus.

The holiday is inextricably linked with the day of remembrance of the outstanding state builder - Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Volodymyr the Great. It was his decision to baptize Rus that determined the civilizational, European vector of development of our state for many centuries to come. Due to the change of the church calendar, the date of the holiday was moved from July 28 to July 15, which restored historical and chronological justice. This day is a testament to the continuity of state traditions from Rus, the Kingdom of Galicia-Volhynia, the Cossack Hetmanate, the Ukrainian People's Republic to modern, united Ukraine.

Day of the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (First Sunday of July)

In the conditions of a full-scale war, this holiday has acquired special value. Ukrainian navy sailors, marines, and coastal artillery units demonstrate incredible heroism every day. They changed the rules of modern warfare at sea, forcing the enemy fleet to hide and ensuring the operation of vital sea corridors. This day is an opportunity to pay tribute to those who protect the maritime borders and to remember those who gave their lives for a free Ukrainian sea.

Day of the National Police of Ukraine (July 4)

A professional holiday with a clearly defined state status. The date was not chosen by chance: it was on July 4, 2015, on Sophia Square in Kyiv, that the first patrol police officers took their oath, which became a symbol of a large-scale reform of the law enforcement system. Today, police officers not only maintain order on peaceful streets but also directly participate in combat operations, conduct evacuations from under fire, document war crimes, and ensure security in de-occupied territories.

Church holidays in July

Since September 1, 2023, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) have switched to the New Julian calendar. This epochal decision freed the Ukrainian church from its attachment to the Russian chronological space. Accordingly, the dates of fixed church holidays shifted back by 13 days, which radically changed the structure of the July calendar. For example, the holiday of Ivan Kupala (Nativity of John the Baptist) and Saints Peter and Paul are now celebrated in June.

Day of Remembrance of Equal-to-the-Apostles Prince Volodymyr (July 15)

A major church holiday dedicated to the baptizer of Kyivan Rus. Prince Volodymyr carried out not just a religious act, but a powerful geopolitical reform, uniting disparate tribes with a single faith and integrating his state into the Christian world. On this day, solemn liturgies and prayers for peace and prosperity of Ukraine are held in churches.

Synaxis of the Archangel Gabriel (July 13)

A day of honoring one of the highest angels, who in biblical tradition is the chief messenger of God's mysteries and good news. It was Gabriel who brought the Virgin Mary the news that she would give birth to the Savior.

Day of the Prophet Elijah (July 20)

One of the most revered holidays among the people, which previously fell on August 2. The Prophet Elijah in Christian tradition is considered a powerful zealot for the purity of faith, and in folk consciousness, his image was often combined with ancient ideas about the ruler of thunder and lightning. In ancient times, it was believed that after "Elijah's Day" one should no longer swim in open waters, as the water becomes cold, and summer gradually begins to turn towards autumn. This day was also traditionally associated with prayers for rain or, conversely, for the cessation of prolonged downpours to preserve the harvest.

Dormition of Righteous Anna (July 25)

Day of remembrance of the mother of the Virgin Mary - Righteous Anna. According to tradition, Anna and her husband Joachim were childless for a long time and only through sincere prayers received news from an angel about the birth of a daughter who was destined to become the Mother of God. This day is especially important for women: Righteous Anna is considered the patroness of motherhood, people turn to her with requests for healing from infertility and intercession for children.

Professional holidays in July: who is congratulated

The professional calendar of July is extremely busy. This month, society thanks the specialists who build, heal, count, protect the information space, and ensure the economic circulation of the country.

Day of Architecture of Ukraine (July 1): A holiday for those who shape the face of our cities. Today, architects and urban planners face an unprecedented challenge — planning the large-scale reconstruction of settlements destroyed by war using the latest, inclusive, and energy-efficient technologies.

Day of Accountant and Auditor (July 16): The date is associated with the adoption of the Law of Ukraine "On Accounting and Financial Reporting" in 1999. This is a holiday for people with an analytical mindset, on whose scrupulousness, honesty, and professionalism the stability of every enterprise and the state economy as a whole depends.

Day of the Medical Worker (July 27): Since 2023, by Presidential Decree, this holiday has received a new date. Previously, it was celebrated according to the Soviet tradition in June, which synchronized us with the aggressor state. The new date is a manifestation of deep respect for Ukrainian medics. From a family doctor in a rear-area clinic to a combat medic in a trench or a surgeon in a frontline stabilization point — these people perform feats daily, snatching lives from the jaws of death.

Day of Workers of the Metallurgical and Mining Industry (Third Sunday of July): Metallurgy is historically one of the backbone industries of Ukrainian industry. Even despite the destruction of industrial giants and logistical blockades, metallurgists continue to hold the economic front.

Day of Trade Workers (Last Sunday of July): A holiday for millions of Ukrainians - from cashiers in supermarkets to logisticians and managers who ensure the uninterrupted supply of goods and create the lion's share of jobs.

System Administrator Day (Last Friday of July): An unofficial but very popular holiday for IT specialists who, through invisible work, maintain the operability of servers, networks, and databases, protecting the information space from cyberattacks.

July holidays: international and unofficial events

The world community and the United Nations (UN) have designated a number of important initiatives for July aimed at solving global problems and uniting people.

World Population Day (July 11)

A holiday established by the UN in 1989 to commemorate the day when the Earth's population exceeded the 5 billion mark. This date is not for celebration, but for reflection on global demographic challenges: poverty, equality, access to healthcare, the migration crisis, and the rapid aging of the population in developed countries against the backdrop of demographic explosions in developing countries.

World Youth Skills Day (July 15)

Another UN initiative aimed at drawing attention to the problem of youth unemployment and the importance of investing in vocational and technical education. In today's rapidly changing world, the ability to adapt and acquire new digital skills is the key to a successful future.

International Chess Day (July 20)

Celebrated on the day of the founding of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) in 1924. Ukraine is one of the leading chess nations in the world, whose grandmasters have repeatedly won world chess crowns. This day unites intellectuals of all ages and promotes a game that develops strategic thinking.

International Day of Friendship (July 30)

One of the brightest holidays of July, the resolution for which was adopted by the UN General Assembly. The main idea of this day is that friendship between peoples, countries, cultures, and individuals can inspire efforts to ensure peace and overcome barriers. In Ukrainian realities, true friendship and solidarity have acquired sacred significance: from mutual aid among neighbors to the powerful support of international partners and volunteer movements around the world.

World Kiss Day (July 6) and World Emoji Day (July 17)

These are pleasant, informal holidays that add emotional color to summer. Emoji Day, for example, is celebrated on July 17 because this date is traditionally displayed on the calendar icon in most operating systems. These days remind us of the importance of emotional communication and warm feelings even in the digital age.
