According to Hegseth, U.S. President Donald Trump is currently in no rush to announce any agreements with Tehran, as he seeks guarantees to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
The status at this moment is that any deal will be a good deal - the Pentagon chief stated during a Q&A session following his speech.
Hegseth also mentioned that he spoke with Trump on the morning of May 30.
He wanted me to emphasize once again how patient he is in striving to ensure that any deal is a good, great deal
At the same time, he warned that if Iran does not agree to terms that would make obtaining nuclear weapons impossible, then Tehran will have to "deal with" the U.S. armed forces.
After the speech, journalists asked Hegseth to clarify his phrase about "any deal." In response, he stated:
I love these disingenuous questions from a disingenuous press. I said it will be a good deal
The Pentagon chief also assured that American troops are ready for a possible resumption of hostilities if ordered, and that U.S. weapon stockpiles are sufficient to carry out the tasks.
