April 26: International Intellectual Property Day, World Women's Health Day

It was on April 26, 1900, that American seismologist Charles Richter was born. In 1935, he proposed his own scale for assessing the strength of earthquakes, which was named in his honor.  

The Richter scale  is a logarithmic scale with a base of 10, the values on which are obtained by calculating the logarithm of the combined horizontal amplitude of the largest offset from zero indicated by the seismograph. The amplitude attenuation by the distance between the earthquake epicenter and the seismograph is corrected by subtracting the logarithm of the predicted earthquake amplitude of order 0 at this distance.

The Richter Scale, although accepted worldwide, had certain flaws, so it was constantly being refined.

Nowadays, earthquake intensity is determined by the Surface Wave Magnitude Scale, which is called the Richter Scale by old habit.
