In Indonesia, the Marapi volcano has begun erupting on the island of Sumatra. It threw a column of smoke to a height of three kilometers. This is reported by the country's Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), UNN reports.

Details

The 2,891-meter-high volcano began erupting at 14.54 local time. Experts recorded the eruption of Marapi with a maximum amplitude of 30 mm and a duration of 4 minutes and 41 seconds.

It is known that  the volcanic ash plume spread with high intensity over the surrounding areas.  Pictures and videos from BNPB show cars and roads covered in ash.

Update

Local authorities have banned residents and tourists from carrying out any activities within 3 kilometers of the crater, and have also set a second level of alert for this volcano.

According to the volcanological agency, Indonesia is located on the "Ring of Fire" of the Pacific Ocean and has 127 active volcanoes.
