12 cases of botulism recorded in Ukraine since the beginning of the year

During the first four months of 2026, 12 cases of botulism among adults were recorded in six regions of Ukraine. Most often, the cause of severe poisoning is home-canned food, dried fish, and meat products manufactured in violation of technology. This was reported by the Ministry of Health, according to UNN.

Cases of the disease were registered in Volyn, Zhytomyr, Zakarpattia, Ternopil, Khmelnytskyi, and Cherkasy regions

Botulism is a severe food poisoning (toxicoinfection) that occurs due to the consumption of products containing botulinum toxin. This toxin affects the nervous system and can lead to paralysis of the respiratory muscles.

Most often, the causes of botulism are:

• home-canned meat, fish, and mushrooms;

• dried, smoked, or salted fish;

• sausages and other meat products manufactured or stored in violation of technology.

Important: botulinum toxin cannot be detected by the taste, smell, or appearance of the product. Even canned goods that look high-quality can be dangerous.

How to protect yourself:

• do not consume home-made canned goods if you are not sure that the preparation technology was followed;

• avoid dried, smoked, and salted fish of unknown origin;

• do not buy products in places of unauthorized trade;

• do not consume products if there are doubts regarding their storage or transportation conditions.

The first symptoms of botulism may appear 12–24 hours after consuming the contaminated product, but sometimes as early as a few hours or after several days.

Pay attention to the following signs:

• blurred vision, double vision, or a "fog" before the eyes;

• dry mouth;

• difficulty swallowing and speaking;

• muscle weakness, dizziness;

• nausea, vomiting, or bowel dysfunction;

• feeling of shortness of breath.

At the slightest suspicion of botulism, seek medical help immediately. The earlier treatment is started and the botulinum antitoxin is administered, the higher the chances of recovery. Take care of yourself and pay close attention to food safety
