Pedro Sánchez
Spanish politician
Pedro Sánchez Pérez-Castejón was born on February 29, 1972, in Madrid. He earned a degree in economics from Complutense University and a doctorate in economics from Camilo José Cela University, taught at universities, and worked as an economic consultant before entering high-level politics. He is a member of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) and has been a deputy in the Congress of Deputies since 2009. He first led the party in 2014, but was forced to resign in 2016 after an internal party conflict over support for the conservative government, after which he made a political comeback, becoming the leader of the PSOE again as a result of the 2017 party primaries.
In June 2018, he became head of the government of Spain, becoming Prime Minister after a successful vote of no confidence by the Socialists against conservative Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy amid a corruption scandal in the People's Party. Since then, he has led several governments, including the first coalition government in modern Spanish history with the left-wing party Podemos (from 2020). He pursued a policy of active support for Ukraine after the full-scale Russian invasion and advocated for strengthening Spain's position within the EU.
