We would like to add that Romanchuk holds the Olympic record for this distance.
The Ukrainian will still compete for the 1500m freestyle final, with qualifying taking place on Saturday, August 3.
Romanchuk made his first comment after failing to qualify for the 800m freestyle.
"I don't know what to say. I am in complete despair. This is not what I was preparing for, what I worked for all year. I can't say anything else. There are simply no words. There were two distances, and now I have one left. We need to draw conclusions as to why it is like this and approach the 1500 meters with a cold head," Romanchuk said in an exclusive commentary for Suspilne Sport.
