The Ukraine national ice hockey team began its performance at the 2026 IIHF World Championship Division IA with a defeat. In the opening match, the "blue-and-yellows" lost to the tournament hosts, the Polish team, UNN reports.

In the first period, the teams exchanged goals: the Ukrainians responded to Chmielewski's goal with a precise shot by Traht – 1:1.
In the second 20-minute period, Dmytro Khrystych's men held a total advantage, but instead conceded a goal – Wronka scored to make it 1:2.
The third period started very successfully for the Ukrainian national team – Denyskin restored parity in the score. However, shortly before the final siren, Krężołek put the hosts ahead again and, as it turned out, set the final score of the match – 2:3.
In other first-round matches, Kazakhstan defeated Lithuania 4:1, and France proved stronger than Japan, winning 4:3. This Sunday, the Ukrainian national team will face Lithuania. The match starts at 17:00.
