Ukraine and the Republic of Latvia have signed an intergovernmental agreement on mutual recognition and exchange of driver's licenses without taking additional exams. This is already the sixth such agreement of Ukraine with other states. The press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs reports this, UNN writes.

Details

The ministry noted that the decision is of particular importance against the backdrop of migration processes caused by the war, when a significant number of Ukrainians are abroad, including in Latvia. The agreement expands the list of countries that recognize Ukrainian driver's documents on a full-fledged level.

Currently, similar agreements are already in effect with Spain, Italy, the United Arab Emirates, Lithuania, and Türkiye. The Ministry of Internal Affairs emphasizes that the signing of the new agreement resulted from cooperation between the Main Service Center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Road Traffic Safety Directorate of Latvia.

Eurointegration and new standards

The ministry emphasized that one of the priorities is Eurointegration and deepening international cooperation. In particular, this involves implementing the provisions of EU Directive 2025/2205 on driver's licenses, which replaced the previous Directive 2006/126/EC.

Work is also underway to connect to the EUCARIS system and utilize international experience in the field of data exchange and protection.

Reducing corruption risks

The Ministry of Internal Affairs noted that in recent years Ukraine has made progress in minimizing corruption risks when obtaining driver's licenses, which contributes to improving road safety and strengthening the trust of international partners.
