Trump planned to withdraw US troops from Germany, Pentagon was shocked - media
Kyiv • UNN
The US President plans to withdraw American troops from Germany following a conversation with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. The Pentagon and NATO allies were not warned about this decision.

U.S. President Donald Trump's statement regarding a possible reduction of American troops in Germany came as a surprise to the Pentagon and NATO allies. This was reported by Politico, according to UNN.
Details
According to the publication, the U.S. Department of Defense essentially learned of Trump's intentions from his social media post. A congressional aide noted that the department "did not expect this and had not planned for any reduction of the contingent."
Trump's Unexpected Statement
The issue concerns the possible withdrawal of hundreds or even thousands of American troops from Germany. This contradicts a recent review of the U.S. global military presence, which did not envision a significant reduction of forces in Europe.
As sources note, such rhetoric from Trump has intensified during his second term. Previously, he has threatened to reduce U.S. participation in NATO and has made sharp statements regarding allies in Europe.
Context and Europe's Reaction
In particular, the U.S. President criticized Germany and its Chancellor, stating that Berlin should focus more on the war in Ukraine and domestic issues rather than international matters.
Separately, Trump also suggested the possibility of withdrawing troops from Italy and Spain.
According to Politico, these statements were made shortly after a phone conversation between Trump and Putin, who has previously repeatedly advocated for a reduction of the NATO military presence in Europe.
In Europe, such signals have caused concern. German officials were surprised, as they had held constructive talks with American partners regarding defense cooperation just the day before.
Possible Consequences for NATO
Currently, between 35,000 and 40,000 American troops are stationed in Germany. Key U.S. military facilities are also located there, including the commands for forces in Europe and Africa, as well as one of the largest military hospitals outside the U.S.
Experts warn that a troop withdrawal could weaken the deterrence of Russia and negatively impact NATO security. Furthermore, such an operation would be complex and expensive, as it would require moving personnel and equipment and creating new infrastructure.
The Pentagon stated that they are ready to implement any presidential decisions, but emphasized that various scenarios are currently being considered.
