Hegseth reportedly has considerable military and political experience: he previously led the political groups Vets For Freedom and Concerned Veterans for America and was considered a candidate for the post of Secretary of Veterans Affairs in 2017, during the first Trump administration.
Hughes, who is also a Fox News host, served as a platoon leader at the Guantanamo Bay military base and has defended the detainee detention methods. His military career includes combat service in Iraq and Afghanistan, which has earned him credibility with military and political allies.
