Three communication cables between Estonia and Finland are out of order - media

A total of four data cables are currently not in use. The Finnish network company Fingrid did not rule out the possibility of sabotage.

Three more cables between Finland and Estonia fail due to malfunctions

As for the latest malfunctions, the Estonian Ministry of Economy reports the following:

One of the submarine telecommunication cables belongs to Citic Telecom, and the other two belong to Elisa. The cause of the failure is unknown. 

Earlier, it became known that the Estlink 2 cable, which supplies electricity from Finland to Estonia, was broken.

Currently, 4 cables are down. The Finnish network company Fingrid did not rule out the possibility of sabotage. The Finnish police have started checking the ships that were near the rupture site.

The damage was probably caused by the oil tanker Eagle S, flying the Cook Islands flag, which was stopped by police and border guards, Helsingin Sanomat writes .

According to the Finnish authorities, the cause of the damage to the Estlink 2 cable is the Cook Islands-flagged Eagle S, and especially its anchor. On Wednesday, a Border Guard patrol boat noticed that the ship's anchors were out of place and that something unusual was happening.

On Christmas Day, the power supply along the Estlink 2 line between Finland and Estonia was interrupted. The Finnish authorities are investigating the cause of the outage, not ruling out the possibility of vandalism.

The 225-meter long Yi Peng 3 anchored for 160 km, damaging submarine cables between European countries. Investigators are considering a version of deliberate sabotage with possible involvement of Russian intelligence.
