U.S. destroyers intercept missiles targeting a container ship in the Red Sea, thwarting a Houthi attack.
The United States shot down two anti-ship ballistic missiles fired from Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen toward a container ship in the southern Red Sea. UNN reports this with reference to the US Central Command.
Details
On Saturday, December 30, the container ship MAERSK HANGZHOU reported being hit by a missile while passing through the southern Red Sea. The Singapore-flagged container ship, which is owned/operated by Denmark, called for assistance.
Two US destroyers responded.
During the response, the USS GRAVELY shot down two anti-ship ballistic missiles fired from Houthi controlled areas in Yemen toward the ships
It is noted that this is the 23rd illegal Houthi attack on international shipping since November 19.
Addendum
The U.S. Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on one person and three organizations for facilitating the flow of financial aid to the Yemeni Houthis. These are the head of the Sana'a Currency Exchange Association and three exchange offices in Yemen and Turkey.
