Tehran says it has agreed with the US to continue talks on the atom next week

The delegations of Iran and the United States completed a round of consultations in Oman on Saturday on the nuclear issue and agreed to hold a new meeting next week. This is reported by Reuters with reference to the Iranian side, writes UNN.

Details

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Arakchi wrote in his Telegram channel that his delegation had a brief meeting with the American side, which was headed by Trump's special representative for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, after the completion of indirect negotiations organized with the mediation of Oman.

After more than 2.5 hours of indirect negotiations, the heads of the Iranian and American delegations exchanged a few words in the presence of the Omani Foreign Minister during the exit from the negotiations

- Arakchi noted.

He added that the negotiations — the first between Iran and the Trump administration, including his first presidential term (2017–2021) — took place in a "productive and positive atmosphere."

"Both sides agreed to continue negotiations next week," Arakchi wrote, without specifying the location and date of the new meeting.

The American side has not yet commented on the negotiations.

Earlier, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Bagai said on the social network X that each of the delegations was in a separate room, and the exchange of messages took place through the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Oman, which emphasizes the deep division in relations between the United States and Iran.

The current goal of the negotiations is to reduce tension in the region, exchange prisoners and conclude limited agreements on easing sanctions (against Iran) in exchange for control over Iran's nuclear program

- a source in Oman told Reuters.

Bagai denied this information, but did not specify which part of it was false.

Oman has long acted as a mediator between Western countries and Iran, including facilitating the release of several foreign citizens and dual nationals held in the Islamic Republic.

Let us remind you

Trump stated about readiness to use military force against Iran if it does not stop the nuclear program.

Meanwhile, Iran is considering the possibility of direct negotiations with the United States in exchange for easing sanctions or unfreezing part of the assets. The Iranian authorities are waiting for concrete steps from the United States.
