On June 9, Slovenia will hold a referendum on the legalization of euthanasia and the cultivation of cannabis for medical and personal use, combined with elections to the European Parliament.

In the summer, on June 9, Slovenia will hold a referendum on the legalization of euthanasia and the cultivation of cannabis for medical purposes. This was reported by UNN with reference to Slovenia Times.

Details

The largest party in the ruling coalition, the Svoboda Movement, has proposed holding referendums on these three issues and combining them with the European Parliament elections to increase voter turnout.

The ruling party explains that the reason for holding a referendum on the day of the European Parliament elections is precisely the weight of these issues. In addition, it will save money.

Instead, the Social Democrats and New Slovenia tried to challenge the referendum in the Constitutional Court. They believe that the questions allegedly violate the constitutional provision on the inviolability of human life. It is not yet clear whether their petition can disrupt the referendums.

At the same time, the cannabis question has changed significantly over time. While initially it was proposed to put a question on the legalization of the cultivation, processing, sale and use of cannabis for medical purposes, now voters will face two separate questions: support for the cultivation and processing of cannabis for medical purposes, and "cultivation and possession of cannabis for limited personal use.
