In February 2024, Gazprom became the largest supplier of pipeline gas to China for the first time, surpassing the perennial leader Turkmenistan.
Gazprom became the largest supplier of pipeline gas to China in February 2024. It is noted that for the first time Gazprom has surpassed the long-term leader, Turkmenistan, in terms of supplies. In terms of pipeline gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies, Russia has been the leader in the Chinese market for the past month, surpassing Turkmenistan and Australia (LNG).
According to published pipeline gas supply data for February 2024: Gazprom exported 2.5 billion m3 of gas to China. While Turkmenistan sent about 2.4 bcm.
In the previous 2023, dispatches were at a similar level: in February, Turkmenistan reduced deliveries to 82 million m3/day.
Uzbekistan stopped exports to China altogether. In December and January, shipments continued, but at a minimal level.
China's total imports by pipelines amounted to 5.346 billion m3 of natural gas, 17% higher than in 2023, when the total volume was 4.558 billion m3. Which is the highest February total in the history of the nation's natural gas industry.
Note that China currently receives pipeline gas from five countries: Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Myanmar.
LNG supplies
China is actively buying LNG as well. In February 2024, imports rose 24% to 6.648 million tons, or 8.645 billion m3. This is also the highest level of LNG imports in February in the country's economic history. Liquefied natural gas to China is now supplied by: Australia, Malaysia, Qatar, Russia, Qatar and the US.

Earlier, Gazprom's press service saidthat in early January, the company withdrew daily gas supplies to China through the Power of Siberia pipeline under a new contract for 2024, and set a historic record for daily pipeline gas exports to Chinese consumers.
