Russia is increasing its dependence on China for critical military technologies - Bloomberg

Russia imports over 90% of sanctioned technologies through China, indicating Moscow's growing dependence on Beijing amid dictator Vladimir Putin's protracted war against Ukraine. This was reported by Bloomberg, according to UNN.

As the publication notes, this figure has risen from approximately 80% last year, as the European Union tightens control over the routes through which Russia receives prohibited goods, according to individuals familiar with the situation who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal assessments. While the specific volumes of the changes were not specified, Russia has been able to use this support to ramp up production of many types of weaponry, including missiles and drones.

The EU applies sanctions to deprive Russia of access to technologies needed to use or produce such weapons, including semiconductors, integrated circuits, electronics, and machinery. The bloc has also introduced restrictions against companies in several countries, including China and Hong Kong, which are accused of helping Moscow circumvent sanctions.

However, these measures have not prevented China from continuing to supply Russia with critical resources. Beijing has also provided Russia with geospatial intelligence, satellite imagery for military purposes, and drones, despite reducing such supplies to Ukraine and other countries

At the same time, most EU countries are in no hurry to introduce tougher sanctions against China, fearing its possible retaliatory measures.

China has repeatedly stated that it does not recognize international sanctions and maintains normal trade relations with Russia. Earlier this month, Beijing stated it would take necessary measures after the EU added a number of Chinese companies to a new sanctions package.
